According to data from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), there is a noticeable trend towards larger livestock farms in Germany. Although the number of head of livestock is decreasing compared to 2010, this development is accompanied by an even greater reduction in the number of livestock farms. As a result, the average number of animals per farm is increasing.

In regards to pig production, the number of pig farms has decreased by 47% to 32,100 farms in the last 10 years, while the pig population has only decreased by 4% to 26.6 million animals in the same period. While in 2010 each farm had an average of approximately 459 pigs, in 2020 there were 827 pigs per farm.
