Germany: Larger pig inventory compared to provisional data

The final results of the swine census published by Destatis as of November 3, 2021 show that the drop in pig inventory is somewhat less than expected based on the preliminary results reported in December.

According to final results from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), as of November 3, 2021, Germany's swine inventory was 23.8 million pigs, down 8.9% or 2,307,600 animals compared to November 3, 2020. Although the drop is somewhat smaller compared to the preliminary results reported in December (-9.4%), the reduction in the German swine inventory is still high compared to the previous year.

Finishing pigs accounted for 46.3% or 11.0 million animals. Compared to November 2020, the number of finishing pigs decreased by 950,600 animals (-8.0%).

The number of pig farms was 18,800 as of November 3, 2021 (-7.8% compared to November 2020; 1,600 farms less). In November 2019, there were 21,200 pig farms in Germany, which shows that there has been a drop of 11.1% or 2,400 farms in the last two years.
