Germany: Meat production down in the third quarter of 2015

The quantity of pork produced amounted to 1.3 million tonnes and was thus down by a mere 0.2% year on year.

Commercial slaughterhouses produced 2.03 million tonnes of meat in the third quarter of 2015. This means that the quantity of meat produced fell by 21,900 tonnes compared with the third quarter of 2014 (-1.1%). Changes were smallest in pork production. The quantity of pork produced amounted to 1.3 million tonnes and was thus down by a mere 0.2% year on year (-3,200 tonnes). The number of pigs slaughtered fell by 0.2% to 14.7 million.

The percentage decline was largest in beef production, which totalled 270,900 tonnes and was down 3.2% on the third quarter of 2014 (-8,900 tonnes). The number of cattle slaughtered fell by 4.3% to 851,000 animals. The strongest decline in absolute terms was recorded in poultry meat production. It totalled 376,300 tonnes in the third quarter of 2015. The quantity of poultry meat produced thus fell by 11,200 tonnes or 2.9% year on year.
