Germany: New drop in pork production

According to data by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), meat production fell by some 2.6% or 102,700 tonnes in comparison with the first semester of 2018.

In the first six months of 2019, 29.4 million pigs, cattle, lambs, goats and horses were slaughtered at German commercial abattoirs. Including fowl, the abattoirs produced 3.9 million tonnes of meat.

The volume of pork produced has been 2.6 million tonnes in the first semester of 2019: 3.7% less than in the same period in 2018 (-100,500 tonnes), with 27.2 million pigs slaughtered (1.2 million less, -4,3%).

Pork represented most of the commercial meat production (some 65.8%), followed by fowl (20.0%) and beef (13.8%). Lamb, goat and horse meat represented, as a whole, only some 0.3% of the total meat production.
