According to preliminary data published by the German statistical service (Destatis) as of November 3, 2011 the pig population has risen to 27.4 million head.

According to this data, the number of pigs as of November 2011 has increased by 660,000 head (2.5%) compared with the last survey in May 2011. To clarify, this increase is largely due to the revision of the population required to declare their numbers. Without this change the number of pigs would have remained almost constant.
