The meat consumption registered in 2017 in Germany has dropped to the lowest levels in the last 20 years. According to the data submitted by the Food and Agriculture Federal Agency (BLE), in 2017 each German citizen consumed an average of 59.7 kg of meat, this is, some 800 grams less than in 2016, and some 2.7 kg less than 10 years ago, when the average consumption per capita was 62.4 kg.
The favourite meat for Germans is, by a great deal, pork, with its consumption rising to 35.8 kg in 2017, representing 60.0% of the total meat consumption in Germany. Nevertheless, according to the BLE analysts, a reduction in demand has been seen in this subsector for several years, so that over the 10 last years, its consumption has dropped by 4.7 kg (-12%).
The German pig farmers have increased pork production by 9.1%, reaching a total volume of 4.95 million tonnes. After subtracting the exported live pigs and adding the imports of piglets and fattening pigs, a net production of 5.46 million tonnes is expected for 2017, that compared to the level reached in 2007 entailed a significant increase by 9.5%.
