The Minister of Food and Agriculture of Germany, Ms Julia Klöckner, presented, last week, the new animal welfare labelling that will be initially applied to pork.
It is a voluntary labelling that will inform consumers that the product that they are consuming comes from animals raised under animal welfare requirements above the minimum legal standards.
The Animal Welfare labelling will have three levels based on several criteria: the space allowance, the kind of castration of the piglets, the length of lactation, tail docking, the transport vehicles and the length of the journey or the welfare during the slaughter, among them.
The surveys show that most of the consumers are willing to pay more for food if the animals have been raised under better conditions.
