The German Ministry of Agriculture (BMEL) has reported the presence of African swine fever (ASF) for the first time in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania on a finishing pig farm, in an area previously free of the disease.
The affected farm is located in the municipality of Lalendorf, in the Federal State of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (see map), in an area that was previously free of the disease and about 130 km away from the nearest area subject to restrictions. The farm is a finishing farm with an inventory of 4,038 animals where, following the detection of sudden mortalities of several animals, the suspicion was reported to Germany's official veterinary services, who took samples for a first analysis at the laboratory of the Federal Office for Agriculture, Food Safety, and Fisheries, where they were found positive for viral genome detection by PCR-RT. The samples were sent to the Friedrich Loeffler Institute (FLI), the National Reference Laboratory for ASF in Germany, where they were confirmed positive for ASF by RT-PCR.
From the beginning of the outbreaks until November 16, 2021, Germany has reported a total of 2,534 outbreaks in wild boar (403 in 2020 and 2,131 in 2021), all of them located in the eastern part of the country, close to the border with Poland, and four outbreaks (including the present one) in domestic swine.
