Germany's Federal Minister of Food and Agriculture, Cem Özdemir, explained in a press release that in recent weeks they have been working with Lower Saxony on an informal request to the EU Commission to shorten the duration of the restricted zone. Lower Saxony's Minister of Agriculture, Barbara Otte-Kinast, sent all the information necessary to finally apply for the shortening in Brussels. The application provides information on the epidemiological situation and the protective measures taken.
Cem Özdemir has called on the EU Commission to make a decision quickly, in the interest of the affected farms, as more and more pigs reach slaughter weight. The ministry is also in discussions with Canada to coordinate arrangements for the resumption of pork exports.
