The top 10 meat industry companies accounted for combined total revenue of roughly €18 bill., 5% up on the previous year. Leading the field is once again the pork and beef slaughterer Tönnies from Rheda-Wiedenbrück. Tönnies heads the list with a sales volume of €4.6 bill. This means that it has increased its sales by more than 50% within the last five years.
The pig slaughterers in particular saw a further sharp increase in 2011 thanks to strong foreign business. However, the dynamism is now no longer attributable exclusively to the majors.
The medium-size slaughterers such as Böseler, Düringer, Simon, Teterower and EGO posted growth rates of 10% or more. The poultry sector also profited from German consumers' ongoing appetite for chicken, turkey etc.
Among the cattle slaughterers, Vion, Westfleisch and the Müller group succeeded in raising their slaughter numbers despite an overall downturn for the sector.
