According to information published by the German meat company Tönnies, the increase in COVID-19 cases among the workers of the processing plant in Rheda-Wiedenbrück has led to its temporary closure. In the series of tests conducted by the district of Gütersloh this week, about 400 of the 500 tests evaluated so far were positive.
The slaughter facility was closed Wednesday, June 17, and the remaining areas will be gradually closed.
Although the company had managed to keep the virus out of the plant for many weeks with an early sanitation strategy and numerous protective measures, "unfortunately there has been a major spread", according to Gereon Schulze Althoff, head of the Tönnies pandemic crisis team.
The authorities will decide how long the production area will be closed.
