According to preliminary data from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), 21.3 million pigs were raised in Germany as of November 3, 2022, representing a 4.5% decrease in the pig inventory, down 1.01 million head compared to May 3, 2022. This is the fourth consecutive decrease since November 2020. Compared to November 2021, the inventory is down 10.2% or 2.43 million head and down 18.2% or 4.74 million head compared to two years ago.
By category, 9.7 million finishing pigs were raised in Germany as of November 3, 2022, down 5.4% or 550,400 head from half a year earlier. The number of piglets was also down significantly by 6.6% (-446,100 head) at 6.4 million head. Compared to May 2022, the number of breeding sows was also down by 6.6 % or 99,000 to just under 1.4 million head.
Likewise, the number of pig farms continued to decrease. As of November 3, 2022, there were 16,900 registered pig farms, down 5.2% or 900 farms compared to May 2022. Compared to November 2021, the number of pig farms decreased by 10.1% (-1,900 farms) and by 17.1% compared to two years ago (-3,500 farms).
Comparing the last ten years also shows decreasing trends in the number of pigs and farms. The pig herd has decreased by 24.7 % or 7 million head since 2012, while the number of farms has decreased 43.3 % (-12,900 farms). As the number of farms has decreased more than the number of pigs raised, the average swine herd has increased from 949 to 1,259 pigs per farm over the last ten years.
