Just a few months after the launch of the federal program for the conversion of animal husbandry, the 100th application for investment funding has already been submitted. The BMEL supports pig farmers in converting to more animal-friendly and environmentally-friendly husbandry. So far, around 63 million euros have been applied for, with up to 150 million euros available from the federal budget in 2024.

Federal Minister Cem Özdemir explains: “I want good meat to continue to come from Germany in the future. In view of the challenges in pig farming, such as structural breaks, declining meat consumption, and higher consumer demands, farmers need economic prospects and planning security. More space and better conditions for animals cost money. I am delighted to be involved in the funding program and am committed to ensuring sufficient funding.”

Background

The BMEL is pursuing a multi-stage concept for future-proof animal husbandry. The federal program launched on 1 March 2024 and offers financial support for particularly animal-friendly barn conversions and new builds. It also covers ongoing additional costs incurred as a result of more animal-friendly husbandry. A total of one billion euros is available and applications are processed by the BLE. Most applications come from Lower Saxony, followed by Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria.

Since June, farms have been able to submit applications to determine their eligibility for ongoing additional costs. So far, 26 organizations have been recognized and 325 applications have been submitted. Investment funding is independent of ongoing funding.
