Honduras has managed to maintain its status as a country free of foot and mouth disease (FMD), according to official confirmation from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). This certification, granted by the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), recognizes the work and rigorous epidemiological surveillance protocols implemented by the National Agrifood Health and Safety Service (Senasa) of the Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG).
Foot and mouth disease is a disease that mainly affects cattle, pigs, and sheep and its eradication is crucial to protect production and facilitate access to international markets. The review conducted between 2022 and 2024 evaluated the control and surveillance measures, confirming that Honduras has no evidence of the disease.
This recognition highlights the country's technical capacity and commitment to animal health, which reinforces its position as a reliable trading partner.
