How ASF cases in the European Union evolved in 2021

According to data published by the ADNS annual report, ASF cases are on the rise in the EU.

We analyzed the data provided by the European Union's Animal Disease Notification System (ADNS) regarding ASF in 2021 in both pigs and wild boar and looked at which countries have been the most affected.

According to data published by the ADNS annual report, ASF cases are on the rise. A total of 1,826 ASF outbreaks have been reported in domestic pigs in 2021, up from the 1,199 reported cases in 2020. Outbreaks in wild boar have also increased, with a total of 12,076 cases reported in 2021 compared to 10,929 in 2020.

Romania stands out as the country that has continued to have the most confirmed cases of ASF in domestic pigs. ln 2021 the country reported 1,676 outbreaks, and in 2020 it reported 1,053. Looking at outbreaks in wild boar, there were 1,059 confirmed in 2021 compared to 885 in 2020.

Poland reported a total of 124 outbreaks in domesticated pigs, 11 more than the year prior. It is also the country with the highest number of outbreaks in wild boar, with 3,221 reported in 2021, although this is lower than the previous year when 4,070 outbreaks were confirmed.

Germany was considered free of ASF in domestic pigs, but in mid-2021 it reported the first occurrence in the country and four new outbreaks were confirmed. Regarding cases in wild boar, 2,525 outbreaks were reported to the ADNS during 2021.

No outbreaks in domestic swine had been reported in Estonia since the beginning of 2018 until the confirmation of an outbreak in July 2021.

In Hungary, the number of outbreaks in wild boar has decreased. In 2021, 2,584 cases were confirmed compared to 4,001 in 2020.
