On May 14th, a dead wild boar was found in the county of Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg, about a kilometre away from the border with Ukraine. A sample was taken and sent to the National Reference Laboratory: African swine fever was confirmed through PCR on May 16th.
Bearing in mind the proximity of the neighbouring regions affected in Ukraine and the spring migration of wild boars, the most probable cause of the infection is the natural propagation.
These events confirm, once more, the gradual propagation of the disease from Eastern Europe and the difficulty, for the affected countries, in the prevention of the entrance of animals through the borders.
The Hungarian authorities have implemented control measures in the Ukrainian border, including the strengthening of the controls (luggage, vehicles, etc.) and the disinfection procedures, as well as awareness campaigns.
