The European Commission welcomes the political declaration made at the United Nations General Assembly to strengthen the fight against antimicrobial resistance (AMR). At the high-level ministerial meeting in New York, UN member countries, including EU member states, committed to taking concrete action against AMR, as part of the “One Health” approach, recognizing the interconnectedness between human, animal and environmental health.
The declaration reflects a global consensus to combat AMR, which was directly responsible for almost 1.2 million deaths worldwide in 2021 and contributed to another 4.7 million deaths the same year. Political leaders have pledged to improve prevention, surveillance, financing, innovation, and awareness in the face of this growing health crisis. In Europe, AMR affects 20% of bacterial infections, reaching 40% in some states, and costs 11.7 billion euros a year in healthcare expenditure and lost productivity. The EU is prioritizing the fight against AMR by reducing the use of antibiotics by humans, imposing strict rules on livestock farming and stepping up environmental monitoring.
