In an April 19 press conference held by the State Council, Wei Hongyang, the Deputy Director of MARA's Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Bureau discussed the current African swine fever (ASF) situation in China.
Since March this year, 13 ASF outbreaks have been reported nationwide, 12 of which involved domestic pigs, killing a total of 1,313 live pigs. In the same period last year, there were 24 outbreaks that killed 242,200 animals. In general, the development intensity and losses from ASF this year have decreased significantly.
Most of the recent outbreaks were related to the illegal transport of piglets and breeding pigs.
Wei Hongyang deems the current epidemic situation controllable, but realizes that as pig production continues to resume, related transportation activities will continue to increase, and therefore the risk of outbreaks may also increase.
