In mid-May, several Italian agricultural organizations (Coldiretti, Confagricoltura and Cia Copagri) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to be presented to the European Commission which aims to eradicate African swine fever affecting the region of Sardinia using a healthy zone that favors farms with good health status.
The measure consists of 13 points, including a complete database of Sardinia swine by the 31st of July, intensifying inspections and sanctions, the creation of an artificial insemination center, the implementation of policies to promote consumption of products from Sardinia's swine industry, the study of possible measures for animal welfare in the pig production chain, awareness about the creation of one or more committees to promote recognition of PDO or PGI of meat and the island’s sausages.
