The Zooprophylactic Experimental Institute of Umbria and Marche, a reference center for pestiviruses, has confirmed the presence of ASF in suspected samples from wild boar carcasses found in Fraconalto (AL), 20 km from the first confirmed case, and in Isola del Cantone (GE).
In light of the new confirmations, the Ministry of Health has established a new infected zone affecting 114 municipalities in the provinces of Alessandria, Genoa, and Savona, in the regions of Piemonte and Liguria (Figure 1) and has decided to suspend all hunting activities in the infected area, and to limit hunting activities in the neighboring regions (Emilia, Lombardy, and Tuscany). A buffer zone of at least 6 km is also created where passive surveillance of wild boar is intensified and strengthened, including active searches for wild boar carcasses. In the buffer zone, the culling of pigs on family farms is encouraged and accelerated, surveillance on movements of susceptible animals is intensified and strengthened, and the monitoring and verification of biosecurity conditions of farms is strengthened.
According to PCR test results performed by the National Reference Laboratory of Perugia on the samples from the first confirmed case, the virus found belongs to genotype 2, a genotype circulating in Europe and Asia and which differs from the one endemically circulating on the island of Sardinia, which is genotype 1.
