The Tuscan pig breed Cinta Senese now has a patent for its genetic identification. The patent has been developed by Serge Genomics, a spin-off company from the University of Siena that counts with the support of the Consortium for the Protection of the Cinta Senese breed and of the province of Siena.
The patent is grounded on a method based on the DNA analysis that allows the establishment, in the tested samples, of the genetic distance of the swine breed Cinta Senese by comparing the genotype of the breed, the pool of all the genes that compose its DNA. The samples can come from live animals or from meat.
For the development of the patent, the Cinta Cenese animals have had to be selected genetically and compared with other pig breeds. This work has established the grounds for the implementation of an analytic traceability system all along the production chain of he Cinta Senese pigs. The patented method has allowed the definition of the minimum genetic traits that allow the identifiction of the Cinta Senese breed (genotype) and the genetic variability level within the breed.
