The Interministerial Decree was published on August 6, 2020 and "on an experimental basis" until December 31, 2021, the Interministerial Decree requires the mandatory indication of origin in the labelling of processed pork.
It applies to "meat of domestic ungulates", "minced meat", "mechanically separated meat", "meat products" and "meat preparations".
On the labels of these products "it is mandatory to indicate the place of origin of the pork". The information is required to be positioned "in the main field of vision, printed so as to be easily visible and clearly legible". The label must include:
- Country of birth (name of the country where the animals were born)
- Country of rearing (name of the country where the animals were raised)
- Country of slaughter (name of the country where the animals were slaughtered)
The wording "100% Italian" can be used only when the meat comes from pigs born, raised, slaughtered, and processed in Italy.
The results of a consumer survey by ISMEA showed that more than 95% of participants were in favor of clear country of origin labelling. This spurred the Government to implement the Food Labeling Law.
Products already placed on the market or labelled before the entry into force of the decree - i.e. before November 15, 2020 - may be marketed until stocks are exhausted or, in any case, within the storage period provided for on the label.
