According to Japan’s food supply per capita data – released annually and used as an indicator of consumption in Japan – chicken consumption during the Japanese fiscal year 2012 (April 2012 to March 2013) increased 5% year-on-year, to 12kg per person – exceeding pork for the first time on record (data by Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries).
Beef and pork consumption each declined slightly (100 grams/person) from JFY 2011, to 5.9kg/person and 11.8kg/person, respectively.
Total meat consumption (including minority proteins such as sheepmeat) during the JFY 2012 reached 30kg/person, the highest on record, while seafood consumption continued to decline, easing 100 grams from JFY 2011 to 28.4kg/person.
