Japan has regained it foot-and-mouth disease free status. Paris-based World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) approved this last week.

Japan was labeled an FMD infected country in April last years after the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) reported a suspected FMD case among livestock in Tsuno, Miyazaki Prefecture. About 290,000 cows and pigs in the prefecture were culled to contain the outbreak. Exportes were suspended but later resumed to Macao, Hong Kong and Singapore.
