Following the announcement from the Swedish government that an outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) has been confirmed in wild boars in Sweden, on September 7, 2023, the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries took measures to temporarily suspend the import of live pigs, pork, etc. from Sweden in order to prevent the spread of this disease to Japan.

The ministry reiterates that the suspension is to prevent live pigs raised in Japan from being infected with the virus, and is not due to food safety concerns.

There is no record of Japan importing live pigs, pork, etc. from Sweden from 2020 to 2022.
