Since, on 6 October 2010, 3 months will have passed after the destruction of the last case, Japan will shortly apply to the OIE for recovery of status “Freedom from Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) without vaccination”, providing the dossier required to be evaluated by the Scientific Commission for Animal Disease (SCAD), in accordance with the OIE Terrestrial Animal Health Code.

Emergency vaccinations against FMD were carried out in and around Kawaminami-cho since 22 May 2010. The total number of vaccinated animals is 125,668 of 1,066 farms. A total of 49,525 animals were destroyed as cases or susceptible animals after the vaccination because the animals were confirmed to be infected with FMD after the vaccinations. The destruction of the vaccinated animals was completed on 30 June 2010. There has been no outbreak of FMD in Japan since 5 July 2010.

It was estimated that the virus entered into Japan from other Asian countries by the middle of March and at least 10 farms had been affected by the time of first confirmation of FMD on 20 April 2010.
