In 2021, the number of pigs increased by 1.9% compared to the previous year, from 5,449,813 head to 5,551,404 head. Pork production reached 589,581 tons (t), representing an increase of 2.7% compared to 2020, with a production of 574,173 t.
On the other hand, international trade data indicate that Chilean pork imports reached 145,830 t in 2021, representing a growth of 38.5% compared to 2020 (105,297 t), which is the highest volume in the last 10 years. This could be largely explained by the GDP growth in 2021, which increased by 12% compared to 2020 and positioned Chile as the country with the highest growth in the entire region according to OECD data.
As for the prices paid to the pig farmer, in the last year these decreased by 6.8% compared to 2020, going from $1,235 CLP/kg to $1,151 CLP/kg.
