Sales of beef in supermarkets exceeded those of pork for the first time in nine years after foot-and-mouth disease led to the cull of vast numbers of pigs.

According to Lotte Mart on Sunday, beef accounted for 51.4 percent of sales of Korean meat until November, followed by pork (34.8 percent) and chicken (13.8 percent).

Until recently pork topped the list, making up about half of all meat sales from 2003 to 2010.
