Participated in the meeting were several organizations including the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), the Inter-American Development Bank (BID), the World Bank, CAF-Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean, United Nations Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (CEPAL), the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OCDE), the Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), the Biodiversity-CIAT Alliance, the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), and FAO.
Issues such as “globalization without governance,” the new demands of international trade, the weakness of multilateralism and its relationship with all the dimensions of the agricultural sector, considered essential for regional development and strongly related to science, technology, innovation, industrial policies, and logistics, which plays an essential role in the weight and global positioning of Latin America and the Caribbean, were addressed.
Participants agreed that international cooperation must be a catalyst of transformations with an integrated vision while considering the different national conditions, with a science-based approach that emphasizes the issue of financing, taking into account the fiscal restrictions of the nations of the region
Experts shared their perspectives on how global transformations and the weakening of multilateralism are impacting agrifood trade and regional development.
They pointed out that, in the context of new and more difficult conditions for agrifood trade, understanding the characteristics and dimensions of the transformations that are taking place is essential for defining the international insertion strategies of the countries of the region and, especially, of the net food exporting countries.
