The Latvian veterinary authorities have confirmed the first outbreak of ASF in domestic pigs this year on a backyard farm in Gudenieku parish, Kuldīga region on June 7, 2020. The outbreak involved 31 susceptible animals, including 3 cases. The last outbreak of ASF in domestic animals in Latvia was confirmed on July 5, 2019, in Durbe district.

This year, the ASF cases in domestic pigs closest to those in Latvia have been detected in Lithuania (1 outbreak) and Poland (5 outbreaks).

The Food and Veterinary Office (PVD) is carrying out the necessary measures to combat the disease, including killing susceptible animals. A protection zone within a 3-km radius and a surveillance zone within a 10-km radius have been designated around the affected farm. Domestic pig farmers in the protection and surveillance zone are reminded that moving animals from one farm to another is prohibited, as is moving pigs or pork out of these zones. The PVD has also launched an epidemiological investigation to determine how the disease entered the farm.

With regard to ASF cases in wild boar, most of the outbreaks are located in the Kurzeme area and 165 cases have been confirmed so far this year.
