As of May 3rd, 2019, the German pig census reached 25.9 million heads: a decrease by 2% (-532,000 animals) since the last survey in November 2018, according to the data published by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). In comparison with the data as of May 3rd, 2018, the census has dropped by 3.7% (985,000 animals).
In the last 5 years, the number of pigs raised in Germany has dropped by 7.8% (-2.2 million pigs).
The number of fattening pigs has suffered an important drop, with 11.3 million heads as of May 3rd: 4.7% or 560,000 pigs less than half a year ago. On the other hand, the piglets' census showed a slight increase by 1.7% (129,000 animals), reaching 7.8 million heads. During the same period, the number of sows fell by 1.8%, adding up 1.8 million animals.
The number of pig farms also continued dropping, with a total of 21,600 units as of May 3rd, 2019: a decrease by 3.5% (800 businesses less) in comparison with November 2018 and a drop by 5.8% (1,300 businesses less) in comparison with May 2018.
