Last week, Iowa State University (ISU) engineers prepared a news release on this subject highlighting the need for extreme caution when agitating and pumping manure in these deep pits under barns.

As is commonly known and indicated in ISU's news release, when liquid manure is agitated prior to pumping to suspend the settled solids to a pump able slurry, numerous gases are released into the air some including hydrogen sulfide, which is a hazard to people and animals, and methane which is very flammable.
