Pig slaughter in 2021 reached 52.9 million head, which is up 7.3% compared to 2020, when a total of 49.4 million head were slaughtered. In 2021, pork production reached 4.891 million tons, which represents a growth of 9.1% compared to the 4.482 million tons produced in the previous year.
International trade data indicate an increase of 10.6% in the export volume of pork products and by-products, which went from 1.008 million tons in 2020 to 1.115 million tons in 2021. In fact, 88% of total exports corresponded to frozen pork (980 thousand tons), while offal (82 thousand tons) and bone-in legs and shoulders (27 thousand tons) accounted for 7.3% and 2.4%, respectively. Imports reached 5.6 thousand tons in 2021, which represents a growth of 41% compared to 2020 (4 thousand tons).
According to calculations estimated by the economic department of 333 Latin America, per capita consumption would have reached 17.3 kg/inhabitant in 2021, which represents an increase of 8.1% compared to the 16 kg/inhabitant indicated by the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA) for 2020.
According to the 2021 average, live pig prices were up 6.4% against 2020 in the Minas Gerais market, going from $6.61 BRL/kg to $7.03 BRL/kg respectively. Meanwhile, in Santa Catarina, the 2021 average stood at $6.98 BRL/kg, up 10.6% over the previous year ($6.31 BRL/kg).
