Mato Grosso do Sul is sixth in the national ranking of swine farming. In 2022 it slaughtered 2.716 million animals and produced 247,000 tons of pork. In the coming years, the industry should gain even more prominence in the state and in the country, with the implementation of projects for various links in the chain, from genetics to processing, including the development of new uses for byproducts such as waste.
In the next three years, considering the expansion projects announced by already established companies and new ventures, the number of sows in the state should grow 49.2%, jumping from 101.8 thousand to 152 thousand.
Among the ongoing projects are a piglet production unit belonging to Alfa Cooperative, from Santa Catarina, in Sidrolândia, with a capacity for 12 thousand animals; the expansion of the pig slaughtering capacity of Seara/JBS to 10 thousand head per day, in Dourados; and the increase in slaughter from 3.2 thousand to 5.5 thousand animals per day of the Aurora meat packing plant, in São Gabriel do Oeste.
