Meat production in Germany rises by 1.4% in 2024

Meat production increased for the first time since 2016, after seven consecutive years of declines.

According to preliminary data from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), meat production in Germany increased by 1.4% in 2024 compared to the previous year. German commercial slaughterhouses produced 6.9 million tons of meat in 2024 (+97,200 tons compared to 2023), marking the first increase in national meat production since 2016 (8.4 million tons) after seven consecutive years of declines. In total, 48.7 million head of pigs, cattle, sheep, goats, and horses, as well as 693.3 million chickens, turkeys, and ducks, were slaughtered in 2024.

German pig slaughterhouses processed 44.6 million head in 2024, an increase of 1.2% or 531,300 head compared to the previous year. The number of domestically raised pigs slaughtered increased by 1.6%, reaching 43.3 million head. However, the number of imported pigs slaughtered in German slaughterhouses decreased by 9.2%, to 1.3 million head.

In total, German slaughterhouses produced around 4.3 million tons of pork in 2024, representing a 1.9% increase or 80,500 tons more than in 2023. However, this figure is 1.3 million tons less than the record year of 2016, reflecting a nearly 25% decline.
