According to data from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), German companies produced 16.6% more meat-alternative plant-based products in 2023 compared to the previous year, and compared to 2019 production increased by 113.8%. Around 121,600 t of meat alternative products were produced in 2023, compared to 104,300 t in 2022. The value of these products grew by 8.5% to €583.2 million in 2023 compared with the previous year (€537.4 million). The number of producing companies in Germany is also rising steadily (from 51 in 2022 to 67 in 2023).
Despite this increase, the value of meat substitute products remains relatively low compared to meat products. In 2023, the value of meat and derived meat products in Germany totaled €44.8 billion, almost 80 times the value of meat substitute products.
