With the health emergency caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, Mexico's agricultural and fisheries production is expected to close the 2020 agricultural year at 290.2 million tons, 1.0 percent higher than last year, which represents an increase of 2.7 million tons, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
Based on a report by the Agrifood and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP), in the agricultural subsectors, production is estimated at 264.6 million tons, 0.8 percent more than in the agricultural year 2019; in livestock, 23.6 million tons, with a growth of 2.6 percent, and in fisheries, 1.95 million tons, representing an increase of 3.0 percent over the previous year.
Specifically, data on livestock production put production at 23 million tons (including milk production), and the volume of meat (carcass weight) of the main species is expected to increase by 3.4 percent over the previous year, to 7.5 million tons.
By species, pork production is expected to close the year with 1.65 million tons, 3.1 percent more than 2019; poultry with 3.62 million tons (+ 4.0 percent) and beef with 2 million tons (+2.6 percent).
