The surplus in Mexico's agrifood trade balance between January and September 2020 reached US$9.7 billion, representing an annual increase of 38.4%, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
During this period (January-September), agrifood exports reached US$29.32 billion, which represented a 3.9% increase, compared to the previous period.
In the agricultural sector alone, sales totaled 13.86 billion dollars, representing an annual increase of 5.33%, with a positive trade balance of 4.68 billion dollars, an increase of 35.2% compared to the same period in 2019.
The products with the highest international demand were beer, with sales of 3.36 billion dollars; avocado, 2.29 billion dollars; tomato, 1.93 billion dollars; tequila and mezcal, 1.71 billion dollars; bakery products, 1.08 billion dollars; bell pepper, 1.06 billion dollars; strawberry and raspberry, 953 million dollars; sugar, 680 million dollars; and pork, 680 million dollars, among others.
The products with the greatest annual increases in demand are soybeans, 212.6%; cocoa beans, 68.3%; onions and garlic, 48.9%; concentrated milk, 40.6%; pork, 38.3%; unroasted coffee, 32%; beef, 25.1%; and tomatoes, 22.4%.
It should be noted that the agri-food sector contributed 10% of the country's total exports between January and September of this year.
