Mexican swine production up 6.5% in value in 2023

Live pigs

  • The number of pigs slaughtered in 2023 reached 21.3 million head, an increase of 2.1% compared to the 20.9 million head recorded in 2022.
  • At year-end 2023, live pig production totaled 2.24 million tons (Mt), representing an increase of 2.4% compared to 2022.
  • The average weight of live animals was 104.8 kg, an increase of 0.3% over the previous year.
  • The average live pig price was valued at MXN 34.6/kg, 4% above the 2022 estimate (MXN 33.3/kg).
  • The value of live pig production grew 6.5% compared to 2022, from MXN 72,688 million to MXN 77,417 million.

Carcasses

  • Pork carcass production totaled 1.77 Mt, representing a 2.2% growth compared to 2022.
  • The average weight of pork carcasses reached 82.9 kg, a slight increase of 0.1% compared to the previous year's average.
  • The average carcass price was valued at MXN 51.8/kg, 2.9% higher than in 2022 (MXN 50.4/kg).
  • The value of pork carcass production increased 5.1% over 2022, from MXN 87,203 million to MXN 91,682 million.
  • Carcass yield for 2023 was 79.1%, nearly the same as in 2022 (79.2%).
