As part of commemorating National Pig Farming Day, Mexico's Secretary of Agriculture and Rural Development, Julio Berdegué Sacristán, noted that Mexico imports 47% of total pork consumption. "I am sure that if we work together, we can produce more and reach the 1.4 million tons needed to achieve full self-sufficiency”.
The head of the Secretariat stressed that the key to a more resilient, productive, and competitive pig industry lies in sustainability and animal welfare. He also reiterated the Mexican Government's willingness to maintain an open and constructive dialogue with producers.

The event was also attended by industry representatives who supported the government's strategies to move towards food sovereignty. Heriberto Hernández Cárdenas, president of the Organización de Porcicultores Mexicanos (Opormex), emphasized that the industry is prepared to collaborate with the federal administration in implementing strategies to reduce dependence on imports.
Ivan Espinosa, executive president of Opormex, pointed out that Mexican swine farming has evolved significantly in recent decades and proposed structuring the sector's work around eight fundamental axes to consolidate a stronger, more sustainable, and competitive activity.
