Mexico's National Service of Health, Safety, and Agri-Food Quality (Senasica) joined the World Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week, with the aim of raising awareness among veterinary medicine professionals, people involved in livestock production, and the general public about the adverse effects of the misuse of antibiotics, antivirals, antifungals, and antiparasitics.
Specialists from Senasica's General Directorate of Animal Health offered virtual conferences to explain the risks of the indiscriminate use of these types of drugs for the health of animals for consumption and pets, as well as their correlation with public and environmental health problems.
Recommendations were also presented to reduce the populations of microorganisms in poultry and swine farms, both in facilities, materials and equipment, as well as in waste.
Senasica is preparing a Guide to promote the responsible and prudent use of antimicrobials in aquaculture, which will provide essential information on regulations, prescriptions and alternatives to the use of antimicrobials and will soon be available for consultation on the Agriculture agency's web page.
