On the 71st anniversary of Regional Livestock Health Day, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development reaffirmed its commitment to collaborate technically and operationally with the countries of Central America and the Caribbean to prevent the entry of pests and diseases of economic importance to the region, thereby strengthening food security and protecting the assets of small and medium-scale producers.

The region is working on preventing and detecting diseases such as New World screwworm (NWS) from Panama to Guatemala and African swine fever (ASF) in the Dominican Republic.

Mexico is actively collaborating in a regional strategy with the United States of America, through the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service of the Department of Agriculture (APHIS-USDA) and with Central American countries.

In 2022, Mexico, the United States, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti reviewed the actions implemented to address ASF on the island of Hispaniola, as well as the risk factors for entry to the mainland.

The head of Senasica indicated that as a result of this effort, Mexico has made progress in the constitution of a binational group to support and activate a Multinational Emergency Animal Health Device in the Dominican Republic. One of the main objectives of this effort is the training of operational personnel of the Caribbean country by Mexico.
