According to statistics from the Agrifood and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP), Mexico is the sixth largest producer of animal feed in the world and second in Latin America.

The SIAP explained that in 2011 there were more than 28.3 million tons of these products intended for consumption by livestock and pets.

By 2012, 28.7 million tons of feed are expected to be produced by the country’s specialized industry, which is slightly higher than what was achieved in the previous year.

This production is estimated to have a market value of around 12 thousand 121 million dollars, and in this activity employs directly and indirectly more than 270 thousand people.

The SIAP explained that Mexico has 552 agricultural goods processors for feed distributed mainly in the states of Jalisco, Mexico, Michoacan, Puebla, Chiapas, Querétaro and Mexico City.

In 2011, the industry-composed of producers and organizations -reported production of 17 000 870 tons, 63 percent of the feed total. Meanwhile, production of commercial enterprises reached 10 000 463 tons, 36.9 percent of the total.

Of the estimated production for 2012, more than half will be used for poultry, followed by what is generated for the dairy industry and aquaculture, and in third place is the feed for feeder cattle.
