México - Slight reduction in national carcass production

Throughout the last year almost 7.5 million livestock animals were slaughtered, of which 59% were swine, 37.5% cattle, 2.2% sheep and the rest (1.3%) goat.

Throughout the last year almost 7.5 million livestock animals were slaughtered, of which 59% were swine, 37.5% cattle, 2.2% sheep and the rest (1.3%) goat.

As far as carcass production is concerned, this rose to 994,865 tons (68.5% cattle, 30.9% swine, 0.4% sheep and 0.2% goat). National production shrunk by 0.4% compared to the levels reached in 2009.

Specifically for swine production, throughout 2010 swine carcass production reached 308.078 tons in the states of Jalisco (17.4%) and Estado de México (14.3%) the highest producers, followed by Guanajuato (7.7%), Puebla (7%), Michoacán de Ocampo (6.8%), Yucatán (6.2%), Veracruz de Ignacio de la Llave (5.1%), Querétaro (4.3%), Guerrero (3.8%) and Colima (2.9%). In total, this group of states made up 75.5% of the nation production of this kind of meat.
The median price of swine carcass in 2010 was 26.939 pesos per ton, with an increase of 0.7% compared to the year before.
