As part of the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) and the 91st General Session of the World Assembly of Delegates, which is taking place in Paris, France, the governments of Mexico, the United States and Canada signed the Terms of Reference of the North American Animal Health Committee (NAAHC).

The document updates the Committee's bases of operation and objectives, in accordance with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), to continue the joint work carried out by North American health agencies to strengthen safe food trade in the region.

The NAAHC was formalized in 2000 through a memorandum of understanding. For almost 50 years, the Committee has pursued actions to safeguard the health of animals and, consequently, of human beings, with the main objective of guaranteeing the healthy and safe diet of the population of each country.

On an ongoing basis, Mexico, the United States and Canada share information and coordinate actions for the prevention, control and eradication of pests and diseases that could pose a risk to the health animal status of the region, in accordance with WOAH guidelines.

In addition, specialists participating in the NAAHC issue judgments on specific animal health issues for international organizations upon request and share information on changes in relevant regulations, border controls, and epizootics.

The Terms of Reference state that representatives of health agencies will meet once a year in plenary; however, they may request the holding of special meetings to discuss priority or emergency issues.
