The first case of the disease in this country was detected in October 2016, and since March 2017 no new cases had been confirmed until November, when the owner of a backyard farm with 15 animals in the town of Palanca, in the district of Stefan Voda, informed the relevant authorities of a suspicion of African swine fever (ASF). The pigs showed typical signs of ASF (anorexia, high fever and apathy).
On October 27th and 28th, samples of dead pigs with signs of the disease and blood from live pigs were taken. The veterinary diagnosis centre notified the results on October 31st, 2017: the samples were positive with real-time PCR. All the pigs (dead and alive) were destroyed.
On the other hand, last Friday, the WOAH informed of new cases in wild boars shot down from which samples were taken and sent to the veterinary diagnosis centre of the Republic (national reference laboratory) in the context of the national African swine fever surveillance programme. The animals were found in Lucesti (Cahul), Zloti (Cimislia) and Vatici (Orhei).
Another outbreak was detected on a backyard farm in the town of Carpineni, in the district of Hincesti, with five susceptible animals. The pigs showed typical symptoms, and on November 30th, samples from a dead pig that showed signs of the disease and blood samples from the live animals were taken. The veterinary diagnosis centre of the Republic reported the results on December 4th, 2017: the samples were positive with real-time PCR. All the pigs, dead and alive, were destroyed.
