The results of tests carried out in the Netherlands following the confirmation of the first case in 37 years of foot and mouth disease in Germany confirm that no animals with the disease have been found in the country. For this reason, Minister Femke Marije Wiersma of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Food Safety, and Nature (LVVN) has decided to reduce the measures previously implemented. These measures included movement bans and visits to veal calf farms.
The restrictions will remain in place only for the 12 farms for which the results of the new tests are not yet available. The final results are expected to be known early next week. Therefore, as of today, Friday, January 24, the LVVN Minister has decided to lift the movement and visitation bans.
LVVN continues to closely monitor developments in Germany. Fortunately, no new cases of FMD have been found. Germany has not extended the general transport restrictions through the state of Brandenburg now that it has been demonstrated that no other farms are infected. The restriction and surveillance zones of 3 and 10 kilometers around the affected water buffalo farm will remain in force until at least February 11 in accordance with European animal health regulations.
