The Netherlands tightens regulation on transport of ill, injured animals

This should ensure that the risk of animal welfare violations during transport is reduced.

Animals that are slightly injured or ill, and for which the transport may cause additional suffering, will no longer be certified by the Netherlands Food and Consumer Safety Authority (NVWA) veterinarian as of April 3, 2023. This is in light of new insight and scientific research into the transport and animal welfare of pigs and cattle.

The greatest impact of the tightening of restrictions is expected for the removal of dairy cows destined for a foreign slaughterhouse. Fewer dairy cows that are slightly injured or ill will be certified. The expectation is that little will change in regard to the transport of pigs. This remains possible under certain conditions because the new insights here do not lead to a different outcome of the assessment of these animals since the European guidelines came into use in 2021.

The current tightening supports the NVWA veterinarians in making a better assessment of whether or not an animal may be transported abroad. In case of doubt, an animal will not be transported.
