In the last days, new African swine fever (ASF) outbreaks have appeared in commercial pigs in several areas of Ukraine. Last week we informed of the appearance of outbreaks in Sumy and Poltava. The OIE has published new reports about new outbreaks in Chernigov, Kiev, Odessa and Mykolaiv. The two latter regions were free of this disease until now.
In the case of Chernigov, an outbreak that affected 49 susceptible animals, with 2 cases, was detected. In Kiev, a positive animal was detected on a backyard farm, with a total of 81 susceptible animals in a forest area 5 km away from the municipality of Ostrov. In Odessa, an outbreak was confirmed on a farm with 29 susceptible animals, and 3 cases; and finally, an outbreak in Mykolaiv with 2 cases out of a total of 23 susceptible animals.
These outbreaks mean that the situation with respect to African swine fever in Ukraine develops in a pessimistic scenario, predicted by the FAO’s experts. The virus seems to be transmitted by humans and/or means of transportation.
«Several months have passed since the greatest African swine fever outbreaks, and people calmed down and decided that the spreading of the disease had ended. But these new cases show that ASF can break out anywhere, in any region. This means that wild boars are not the transmitting agents, but pig products and means of transportation. This vector is the most dangerous one, as it is unpredictable. It is rather difficult to forecast the future situation,» — says the President of the Association of Pig Breeders of Ukraine, Mr. Artur Loza.
