New decrease in the German pig herd

The number of pigs decreased by 1.7% (or some 457,000 animals) in comparison with May 2018.

On reference date November 3rd, 2018, there were roughly 26.4 million pigs in Germany. Based on provisional results, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) also reports that the number of pigs decreased by roughly 457,000, or 1.7%, in May 2018. In November 2017, the number of pigs was greater by roughly 1.1 million, or 4.1%.

The decrease is especially obvious in the case of piglets and young pigs, with 3.9% and 2.1% less heads, respectively, whilst on the other hand, the number of fattening pigs (some 11.9 million) remained more or less the same than half a year before. Regarding the number of sows (1.8 million heads), it dropped by 1.4% in comparison with May 2018.

The number of pig farms (22,400) also decreased by 4.6% with respect to the same period in 2017.
